TOKYO BIENNALE 2023 / A WALL ATLAS OF DRAWINGS
My drawing process is about slowness.
It is highly intuitive, expanding notions of conceptual art involving the body, gesture and instinctive intelligence.
A wall atlas for thinking with the body.
Materialized knowledge … the wisdom and beauty of the body and its language of gestures.
I re-claim space through gesture…re-thinking drawing in a filmic, poetic and choreographic sense.
Gestures of the body / gestures of the site.
Poetics of the void…the unfinished and imperfect.
The poetics of chance and the beauty of randomness.
Random traces and possibilities for linkages.
For the Biennale I created a cognitive drawing map of my experiences in Bakurocho, a wholesale district in Tokyo, researching the rich history of textiles.
TOKYO NOTEBOOK / SHADOW INK DRAWINGS FOR GORO NAMERIKAWA BUTOH DANCER / SEPTEMBER 2023
These shadow ink drawings were inspired by the memory of my dear friend and mentor Goro Namerikawa ( Sankai Juku ).
I collaborated with him in performances in my large wall drawing installation : Writing on the Body at Sagacho Exhibit Space, Tokyo in 1988.
The shadow drawings speak of the way darkness dimly gives back light.
A sensibility that sees mystery in darkness itself…the butoh dance of darkness.
Goro a luminous presence in his lifetime, like the drawings would reveal and conceal in his dance.
The void spaces…the empty and the full.
The imperfect, asymmetry and randomness in these drawings speak of spaciousness…let the drawings breathe.
I made these shadow ink drawings based on what I saw and experienced over one month living in Tokyo.
I let the drawings fall down the walls...
